Grind bay
GrindDeck Safe
GrindDeck Safe is our shared grinding bay deck built for safer, cleaner fab floors in busy South African workshops and colleges.
What GrindDeck Safe is made for
GrindDeck Safe gives you a solid 1200 by 800 millimetre steel grind deck with a full spark skirt for open-shared or dedicated grinding zones. It's designed for workshops that need a safe spot for angle grinder work, blending, deburring and prepping edges. This is the deck we use in our own fab floor for apprentices, shift teams and mobile bays where the same grinder is shared between jobs.
Municipal yards, agri repairers, mining workshops and TVET training bays all run into the same issues: sparks flying where they should not, dust clogging up floors, and hand tools left lying about. GrindDeck Safe keeps that chaos under control, so you don’t spend the rest of the shift sweeping or hunting for PPE.

How to build a grind bay around it
Start with the GrindDeck Safe at the centre, its spark skirt contains most flying grit and sparks, while the floor dust chute makes cleanup quicker at the end of the day. Pair it with a PPE Station Bay close by for gloves, visors, and hearing protection within reach. Add a Consumable Cart for grinding discs, brushes and routine checks, plus a plug strip on the deck means you don’t have to run extension leads across the floor.
For heavier grinding or cut-off work, use the square fence kit as a backstop and bolt on a spark skirt extension if you have bulkier workpieces. Tag the bay with a shift log card from the MeasureKit Fab set. Our fixings like soft jaw packs and angle blocks are easy to store on the skirt corners or under the deck.
- 1200 x 800 mm deck with spark skirt
- Dust chute straight to floor bucket
- Plug strip on deck for angle grinders
- Pairs well with PPE Station Bay
- Consumable Cart for disc storage
Safety habits and local conditions
South African workshops have to manage more than flying sparks. General Safety Regulation 9 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act applies to grinding as well as welding: guards stay on, disc rating matches grinder speed, screens and fire extinguisher must be ready. Sparks can travel two or three metres, so skirt containment isn’t optional, especially in bays where welders, fitters and apprentices are all working close together.
Highveld winters mean static dust and dry air, which makes steel fines drift further. At the coast, humidity rusts bare steel tops and clamp screws quickly. Power cuts do stop grinders mid-job, so its smart to plan job queues and not leave a deck full of hot swarf when you step out.
How to check fit for your floor
Walk your floor and mark out a 1200 by 800 spot with open space for the spark skirt, don’t wedge the deck into a corner where sparks will bounce back at operators. Check you have a clear route for the dust chute and space for a floor bucket or dustbin.
If your team shares grinders, look for trip hazards, missing guards or loose plug points. GrindDeck Safe is best placed near the welding bays but separated by at least two metres or a fire screen. If you want to see our full setup in Germiston or at a mall showroom, send us a message and we’ll organise a bay demo.
