Roodepoort
Roodepoort structural
A Roodepoort fab yard needed a structural bay for repeatable base-plate work and fast changeovers, with a focus on practical hands-on and safe workflow.
What the Roodepoort yard needed
This Roodepoort site handles a mix of small structural jobs, base-plates, light frames, and batch work for gates and trailer drawbars. With a few apprentices and rotating staff, they wanted a bay that could handle quick setups and safe, clear workflow. Accuracy was critical, but so was the ability to break down jobs for skills transfer and on-the-job training.
The yard is on the West Rand, so they deal with Highveld dust, dry winters, and copper cable faults now and then. With a mix of old and new hands, they needed gear that keeps things simple, sturdy, and quick to reset between jobs. Health and safety compliance was a major box to tick, especially with welding, cutting and grinding all taking place in a single zone.

How we set up the bay
We fitted the bay with a BenchMaster Pro, using its 50 mm hole grid and M10 earth studs for fast, clean earthing. ClampRail System 2.4 metre rails gave them flexible clamping for both small and long steel sections. The JigKit Modular set made it easy to repeat base-plate layouts without faffing over measurements every morning.
For grinding and finishing, a GrindDeck Safe deck was set up at the edge of the bay, with a spark skirt and floor dust chute to keep the walkways clear. The yard added a PPE Station Bay stocked with visors, gloves and signs, plus an EarthBond Kit for safe welding return, clamped directly to each part, or to the BenchMaster Pro’s stud points if the job called for it. A simple Consumable Cart keeps discs, tips and kanban cards on hand, avoiding wasted time hunting for gear.
- BenchMaster Pro fab bench with grid
- ClampRail System for flexible holding
- JigKit Modular for layout repeatability
- GrindDeck Safe deck and PPE Station
- Consumable Cart for easy supply
Adjustments after the first few weeks
Within the first month, a few weak points showed up. Apprentices kept mixing up clamp jaws and misplacing tip board labels, and the PPE rack needed clearer sizing tags. Some of the seasoned welders were still earthing to the bench frame out of old habit, which we corrected with a quick refresher and bold bay tags on the earth bond leads.
We added extra colour tag packs to the PPE Station and tip board, and swapped in soft jaw packs for the ClampRail after a few complaints about marks on primed steel. The workshop manager moved the Consumable Cart closer to the grind deck to cut down on walking time. After these tweaks, the bay ran cleaner and safer, with fewer ‘where’s my…’ moments and a smoother flow between welding, grinding and layout.
What other yards can learn
A structural bay in this mould is more than for big steelwork shops. Smaller yards in Gauteng can use the same grid bench and clamp system to build up accuracy and repeatability, even with mixed skill levels on the floor. The key is a clear earth return point, a logical flow for hot and cold work, and practical storage for PPE and consumables.
Keep bin tags, jaw packs and safety signs clear and up to date, especially when new hands or learners join. If you are working in Roodepoort or anywhere with dusty winters and the odd power trip, plan your work blocks so staff know when welders and grinders will be live again. For any fab team juggling training, production and repairs in the same bay, a good grid bench and clamp system pays for itself in saved time and safer work.
- Set clear earth return points close to the weld
- Keep consumables and PPE within easy reach
- Label everything, especially for new staff
- Use soft jaws for primed or coated sections
