Midrand
Midrand trailer line
In Midrand, a growing trailer yard needed a practical bay line to keep pace with orders, new staff and tight handover targets. We helped them set up a fast, tidy fabrication flow.
The Midrand yard and their challenge
This Midrand trailer yard runs six days a week, building flatbed and livestock trailers for farms and smallholdings across Gauteng. Their main pressure: daily orders have climbed, but the crew is a mix of seasoned hands and new hires from the local TVET college. In winter, they lose time to cold starts and early sunsets, while summer can mean mud and dust blowing in from the R562 side of town.
With two shared welding bays and a grinding corner that doubled up as a measuring spot, the old layout meant tripping cables, jostling for clamps and the odd frame landing skew. The foreman wanted tighter zones, quicker setup between trailers, and gear that could absorb the knocks of busy hands and help train new staff safely.

Setting up with BenchMaster and JigKit Modular
We installed two BenchMaster Pro benches side by side, each with a 2400 by 900 millimetre steel top and M10 earth studs for clean returns right at the bench. To keep things moving, we set up JigKit Modular plates with 12 millimetre slots and angle blocks, letting the team clamp and square drawbars, chassis beams and crossmembers for the three main trailer models they build.
A GrindDeck Safe went in to one side, fitted with spark skirts and a dust chute, so grinding sparks stayed off the measure line and PPE zone. TorchBay Station was placed near the roller-door for cutting, with labelled hose reels, PPE hooks and a visible tip rack. We marked clear floor zones for weld, grind, and measure using high-vis paint and recipe tags clipped to each job, keeping each trailer build moving in its own lane.
Fixtures included soft jaw clamp packs for aluminium jobs, thickness tags on scrap racks, and a PPE Station Bay stocked for three shifts and quick refills. The measuring crew got a new MeasureKit Fab, fillet weld gauges and a square fence kit to keep each frame true to drawing.
How the team adapted and what we tweaked
After three weeks, the main snag was tool congestion at shift change. Two crews tried to use the same clamps and measuring squares, slowing the next build. We added a second set of JigKit angle blocks and more clamp rails, so each work team had their own set. The foreman also set up a shift log using our printable cards in the MeasureKit case. This tracked who finished what weld, whether the frame passed square check, and flagged if PPE was running low.
Another adjustment was swapping one regular clamp rail for a serrated-jaw type, after noticing the standard kits slipped on rust-pitted steel from outdoor storage. Small changes like putting earth bond plates at each bay, and adding extra recipe tag hooks, saved minutes on every frame. The team now finish a typical three-axle chassis with far less queueing, even when power cuts out for an hour in late afternoons.
Lessons for other trailer shops
Clear floor zoning and having a full set of clamps and jigs for each team kept this Midrand yard moving, even with new recruits and shifting staff. The BenchMaster Pro benches, with direct earth studs and dog-hole grid, made it easy to clamp large trailer frames square without makeshift blocks or long tape runs.
A separate GrindDeck and marked PPE area kept hazards and fire risk down, meeting the main points of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and keeping the insurance inspector happy. For yards building repeat batches of the same trailer models, investing in a modular jig system and a stock of shift-ready tags and fixtures is worth it in time saved and less scrap.
If your own yard faces similar bottlenecks at shift change or around the measuring line, send us a message from our contact form to discuss practical layouts and gear kits. We can walk you through what works for busy teams and fast handovers.
- Separate weld, grind and measure zones clearly
- Equip each team with their own clamps and angle blocks
- Use recipe tags and shift logs to track each frame
- Keep PPE and grinder gear easy to refill
