Bloemfontein parks bay

Bloemfontein’s municipal parks team needed a safe, organised fabrication bay for quick repairs and shared crew shifts. Here’s how we set up and fine-tuned their workspace.

The yard and their challenges in Bloemfontein

Bloemfontein’s parks workshop handles everything from mower frames to playground repairs. Crews share space with the roads and water teams, so the yard fills up fast after a wet Highveld morning. Breakdowns come in waves, often at the end of a shift, with pressure to clear jobs safely before equipment moves out again.

Managers needed a bay layout that could cope with three crews across day and night shifts, plus apprentices rotating in. Too often, tools were scattered, PPE was missing, and grinding dust drifted onto paint and measuring gear. The old corner setup had no clear zones or spark protection, so safety and progress both slipped during busy patches.

Setting up the parks bay with fit-for-purpose gear

We supplied a GrindDeck Safe as the central fixture, giving a dedicated 1200 by 800 millimetre grinding area with a plug strip, spark skirt kit and floor dust chute. This cut down airborne grit reaching workbenches and helped crews clear sparks quickly after each job.

A BenchMaster Pro fab bench went in next, anchored at the edge of the grind zone. The M10 earth studs let welders clamp return leads safely for both stick and MIG work, meeting General Safety Regulation 9 for hot work. We fitted a PPE Station Bay with clear and shade visors, gloves and ISO-style safety signs on the entrance wall. ClampRail System rails mounted to bench sides and the wall kept clamps off the bench surface and easy to find between shifts.

Layout and measuring was sorted with a MeasureKit Fab and a small wall-mount ScrapRack Lane for steel offcuts. We tagged all zones and fixtures, colour coding for quick pickup during a busy handover.

Tweaks after the first few weeks in use

After three weeks, the main headaches were spark marks on the wall near the grind deck and gloves going missing during night shift. We fixed the wall marks by extending the spark skirt kit and adding a mobile screen between the grind and paint areas. For PPE, Ms Aisha Moodley helped set up a habit card and logbook at the PPE Station Bay. Crew leaders sign off when restocking visors and gloves, and lost items dropped fast.

A small power trip one Monday morning also reminded the team to queue jobs needing welding and grinding, so nothing starts up half-done. Safety signs and bay tags were updated to nudge crews into putting clamps back and keeping the bench clear for the next shift.

What other municipal yards can learn from Bloemfontein

Shared municipal yards work best with clear, tagged zones and dedicated fixtures for each job. Having a grinding deck with spark skirts keeps dust and sparks away from paint and measuring tools, even when the shift is rushed or the yard is full.

PPE and clamp rails on the wall make it easy to see what’s missing at a glance, instead of hunting under benches at the end of a shift. Habit cards and simple logbooks help teams stay stocked and ready without needing constant checking by management.

Bloemfontein’s parks bay now runs safer and smoother, with less lost gear and fewer arguments over workspaces. The same approach can help any busy municipal maintenance or parks team where crews rotate and jobs change fast.
