Remnant lane map

A remnant lane map is your shopfloor reference for keeping ScrapRack lanes labelled, logged and safe. Use it to track offcuts by thickness and keep jobs organised.

What the remnant lane map is for and who uses it

The remnant lane map shows where each plate or offcut of steel goes in your ScrapRack Lane. It helps foremen, shift leads and apprentices see which thickness, length and job number belongs in each lane, cutting confusion and saving search time.

You fill in the map when setting up your ScrapRack, after each big material delivery, or if you run a shift change in a busy yard. The map sits on a clipboard or card at the rack. In TVET training bays, instructors use it to track practice pieces and reinforce sorting habits.

Steps and fields on the lane map card or sheet

Each map has fields for the rack number, bay location, and today’s date. There are columns for each lane: mark the material thickness in millimetres, colour tag (if you use them), job or project number, and notes for special jobs or PPE reminders.

Update the card when you change what’s stored, or when a lane empties out. Use a permanent marker for rack numbers and laminated maps with whiteboard markers for daily changes.

  • Rack number and bay location
  • Date updated
  • Lane number or letter
  • Material thickness (mm)
  • Colour tag (if used)
  • Job or project number
  • Special notes or PPE needs

How to use the map in your workshop over a month

Store the updated lane map on a hook or clipboard at eye level. Do a quick check at every toolbox talk and after weekend or month-end rack clearing. Use it for handovers between day and night shifts so everyone stores and pulls the right material.

Supervisors can use the map to spot where offcuts build up, which lanes need clearing or where mixing of thicknesses causes safety issues. During monthly audits, compare the map to what’s actually in each lane. Update as needed and train new staff on the system.
