TVET habit cards
TVET habit cards are hands-on checklists for entry-level teams, apprentices and trainers to lock in safe, productive routines right at the fabrication bay.
Why TVET habit cards matter in training bays
TVET habit cards are meant for real fabrication floors, rather than only theory or noticeboards. They give apprentices and new hands a step-by-step guide to safe, repeatable routines during welding, grinding and layout jobs. Trainers use them to set up and enforce habits that match South African workshop risks and gear setups, from shared bays to rotating shift teams.
The cards are filled in by apprentices, learners and junior operators. Trainers and foremen use them to check understanding, support daily toolbox talks, and guide practical training in both college and in-house settings. These cards do not replace the safety file but put the right habits directly in your crew’s hands.

What the card covers and how to use it
Each TVET habit card has simple, numbered steps with tick boxes or short fields. Most are filled out with a pencil or marker at the start and end of each shift. Cards are sized to clip on a bay or lay flat beside the bench.
Typical habit card fields include:
- Bay number and date
- Name and initials of operator
- Pre-start zone check: gas hoses, clamps, PPE, earth bonds
- First job setup: material, plan, fixtures, earth return
- Weld or cut steps: settings, eye and hand protection, fire watch
- Consumable use: discs, tips, electrode count
- Shift-end handover: clear-up, tag-in for next team, defects noted
Using habit cards in the workshop month by month
Habit cards help trainers and shift leads spot gaps in daily routines and keep up with safety requirements like those in the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Toolbox talks often start with the card’s checklist, so every hand knows the standard before picking up a torch or grinder.
Supervisors use completed cards during weekly audits and handovers. Over a month, they can track common errors, pick up on missing PPE or tools, and adjust routines for new risks or contract work. The cards also make it easier to swap teams between bays or bring in new apprentices with less risk and downtime.
