Earth path log

Keep welding earth return routes safe and short with our earth path log. Record clamp positions and cable checks for each shift, every bay.

Why use an earth path log in your bay

The earth path log is a simple card or sheet for tracking where you put your welding earth return clamp, which cable you used and what checks were made. It is filled in by each welder, apprentice or supervisor working the bay that shift. This keeps everyone aware of the current return route, especially on shared benches and during shift changes.

Using a formal record helps prevent return current running through unsafe paths like hinges, bearings, or another bay’s frame. It supports the requirements of General Safety Regulation 9 and keeps everyone accountable for safe clamp points and cable inspection.

What to fill in on the earth path log

Each entry on the log covers one job or shift. Fill it in as you set up or change a clamp, or when handing over to another welder. Complete all fields clearly:

Clear records mean others can check the path at a glance, spot any issues and avoid duplicate clamps or faulty cables. A well-kept log also helps with incident reviews and toolbox talk examples.

  • Date and shift (morning, afternoon, night)
  • Job or part reference
  • Clamp position (describe or sketch: top, side, flange, direct to part, or BenchMaster Pro earth stud)
  • Return cable used (size, ID, and inspection tick)
  • Checked for clean metal, tight fit, no hot spots or rust
  • Any changes or issues (broken cable, moved clamp, sparks seen elsewhere)
  • Signed off by welder and, if needed, supervisor

How to use the log in daily workshop routines

Keep a printed log sheet or card at each bench or bay, clipped to a board or held in a waterproof folder. Welders and apprentices fill it in as they set up, change jobs or hand over at the end of a shift. Supervisors can check the log during walkabouts, at shift change, or during audits. Toolbox talks can draw on real entries to highlight good practice or spot repeat mistakes.

Over a month, a complete log provides a record for safety audits, insurance checks and continuous improvement. Use it to train new staff or apprentices on safe earthing habits and to meet legal records under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
