What the checklist is for and who uses it

The FabMaster Workshop bay layout checklist is a practical tool for foremen, supervisors, trainers, and lead fabricators setting up or auditing welding, grinding, and measuring bays. It is meant for daily or weekly checks in busy metalwork yards, TVET colleges, and maintenance crews where more than one person uses the same space.

The checklist supports safety compliance, easy movement, and tidy shopfloor habits. Each card or sheet is filled in by the person responsible for the bay, usually at the start of shift or after any major bay change or job swap. It is not a replacement for formal risk assessments or statutory inspections, but helps keep to General Safety Regulation 9, clear zones, safe equipment, and proper screening.

Checklist fields and how to fill them in

Each card or PDF sheet lists the key zones and safety points for a full fabrication bay. The user ticks, initials, or writes a short note for each field, confirming if the zone is set and safe. Most fields are quick to check with a visual walk-through.

The printable card covers layout, equipment, and safety basics, with space for date, bay number, and the checker’s name. It works as a routine SOP, and can be clipped to a bay board, Toolbox Talk sheet, or bay audit folder.

  • Weld, grind, and layout zones clearly marked and separated
  • Earth return point clean and within reach (BenchMaster Pro: check M10 studs or clamp to part)
  • No hot work on closed drums or tanks unless certified safe
  • Screens, spark skirts, and PPE racks in place
  • Cables, hoses, and tools stored safely, trip hazards cleared

Using the checklist in your workshop

Workshops use the checklist during Toolbox Talks, weekly audits, or shift handovers. It helps spot bottlenecks, stray sparks, or missing PPE before they cause downtime or injury.

Completed cards show who checked the bay and when, supporting supervision and training records. Use the checklist as part of your safety file, or display the latest card at each bay for reference during toolbox talks or external audits.
