TrainBay Starter

TrainBay Starter specifications

TrainBay Starter brings together layout, welding, grinding and entry-level PPE into a single training bay pack for TVETs and in-house workshops.

What each TrainBay Starter specification covers

The TrainBay Starter sets up three essential zones: weld, grind and layout. Each area is clearly defined for its task to help learners and new operators work safely and stay organised. The open sight rails give full visibility from all sides, so the instructor can watch technique and spot hazards easily.

A starter PPE pack comes with the bay, covering face, hand and hearing protection in sizes for typical apprentices. Printed habit cards remind users of safe routines such as clamping, earth bonding, and using guards and screens. This keeps training consistent from the first session.

  • Weld zone: clear top, clamp points, proper earthing
  • Grind zone: spark skirt, skirted deck, plug strip
  • Layout zone: open surface, measuring rail
  • Open rails: no solid panels to block view or airflow
  • Starter PPE: visors, gloves, plugs, habit cards

Typical loads, materials and processes for TrainBay Starter

TrainBay Starter is designed for apprentice and light fabrication work. Expect to handle flat bar, angle, square tube and plate in thicknesses from 1.6 to 10 mm, up to about 800 mm long pieces on the work surfaces. Larger or heavier assemblies should use full-size benches or structural welding bays.

Welding processes supported: mainly stick (SMAW) and basic MIG/MAG. TIG can be done if you supply your own earth bond kit and workpiece supports. Oxy-fuel and plasma cutting are possible, provided you follow SANS 10019 for gas cylinder handling and have a proper TorchBay Station. Grinding is limited to handheld angle grinders with discs up to 180 mm.

  • Best for: apprentice coupons, T-joints, mitres, bracket repairs
  • Avoid: heavy structural build-ups, overhanging loads, full vehicle chassis
  • Material size: 1.6 to 10 mm thickness common, up to 800 mm length

Choosing and sizing your training bay

For a typical TVET or workshop starter bay, allow at least 2.5 x 2.2 metres clear floor area per TrainBay Starter to fit all three zones with safe walking space. Place bays so that grind and weld sides do not face main walkways, sparks can travel metres.

If you are running multiple bays, set a minimum of 1.5 metres between each for safe movement and clear sight lines. For larger or advanced trainee groups, add more PPE sets and callipers from the MeasureKit Fab range. Use the contact form to get advice or a tailored layout for your floorspace.
