Earth bond plates
Earth bond plates give each welding bay or fab bench a clear, tested earth point for safe, reliable return paths. Fit them to steel tops, fixture tables, or modular jig plates.
What comes in the earth bond plate kit and where it fits
The FabMaster earth bond plate kit includes a heavy-duty earth plate, zinc hardware for direct bolting to steel bench tops or fixture frames, and an M10 or M12 stud for clamp or lug connections. Each plate is sized for typical BenchMaster Pro tops, torch tables, or modular JigKit plates, and has a tagged hole for permanent bay marking.
Fit these plates to fab benches, mobile jig stations, layout tables and training bays. Welders, trainers and workshop managers rely on a visible earth bond to route return current safely and meet General Safety Regulation 9 in busy or shared spaces. They work on new installs and can retrofit to older steel workbenches or mobile tables where factory earth links are missing.
If you use modular bays or swap fixtures between jobs, a bond plate at each common connection point saves time and keeps earth return checks simple.

How to use earth bond plates for safe welding return
Start by bolting the plate directly to clean, bright steel with firm contact, paint or rust under the plate weakens the bond. Attach your welding return clamp or cable lug to the stud, not a bench leg, hinge, or painted frame. For large or awkward jobs, clamp the return cable close to the weld on the workpiece itself.
Check the bond before each shift with a visual inspection and a quick tug on the cable lugs. If a bay has multiple tables or fixtures, each needs its own plate with a clear, direct earth path. Never daisy-chain through bench frames or chains, as this introduces risk of arc burn or stray current.
For training and student bays, clearly mark the earth plate location, and demonstrate the correct cable routing and clamping as part of your induction.
- Clean steel surface before fixing the plate
- Use only the supplied stud for return clamps
- Check cable lugs and clamp springs regularly
- No shared returns between adjacent benches
- Label each earth point for easier checks
Care, spares and common mistakes with bond plates
Wipe plates and studs weekly to remove spatter, dust, or corrosion, especially in coastal shops or dusty Highveld conditions. Tighten all nuts and re-check tags after moving a table or changing a fixture.
Order spare studs, tags and fixing hardware through our contact form if any part is damaged or lost. Always replace a plate if it shows deep pitting, burns or loose contact after a heavy arc strike.
Common mistakes include clamping to painted surfaces, using the wrong thread for earth connections, or letting return current run through hinge points or bench legs. Always check the full return path and never assume a painted frame is earthed.
