Spark containment SOP

This spark containment SOP card guides safe grinding and welding habits for every bay, using GrindDeck skirts, practical barriers and shift-ready checks on real South African floors.

How the spark containment SOP works on your floor

This SOP card is a practical tool for foremen, trainers and welders. It sets out the daily checks and safety steps that stop grinding and welding sparks from crossing into unsafe zones. You use it at each bay, especially where grinding, cutting and welding run side by side.

The person in charge of a bay fills in the SOP card at the start of shift, after any changeover, and during toolbox talks. Anyone running a shift handover, site audit or apprentice training session can use this card as proof that correct spark barriers, skirts and PPE steps are in place.

This card is suitable for any steel or aluminium workshop where sparks could threaten hands, eyes, tools or sensitive areas. It meets the General Safety Regulation 9 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and is practical for both TVET bays and production floors.

Fields and steps covered on the SOP card

Each SOP card is set out as a step-by-step checklist. You tick off or fill in each as you walk the bay. Steps cover both the physical setup and safe habits that keep sparks where they belong.

The checklist keeps fields simple, so even junior staff or apprentices can use it correctly after a 10-minute induction. All fields must be checked off before power tools or hot work begin.

  • Check GrindDeck skirt is fitted and in good order
  • Inspect spark skirt, plug strip, and floor chute for obstructions
  • Confirm fire extinguisher and sand bucket are within reach
  • Mark bay spark boundary lines (tape or painted)
  • Check screens are up and PPE signs are visible
  • All grinders have rated discs and guards fitted
  • Log who opens and closes the bay each shift

Using the SOP card in a real workshop month

You use this SOP card at every toolbox talk, shift start, and audit. Keep completed cards in a monthly log binder for quick reference during safety walks or after any spark incident.

Trainers use the SOP for new staff induction and after any near-miss. Shift leads update the card at bay handovers, so everyone knows the last checks were done. Auditors or safety reps refer to it as evidence for regulatory compliance.

Over the month, frequent use of the SOP card builds spark safety habits in both juniors and experienced hands, reduces tool and PPE damage, and helps spot weak points in bay barriers before they cause problems.
