ScrapRack lanes and remnant costing

FabMaster’s ScrapRack Lane system is now on the training floor and shop floor, helping fabricators manage steel offcuts, remnant tracking and job costing with clearer lanes and shift cards.

ScrapRack lanes in action at our Germiston training floor

The full ScrapRack Lane system is now up and running on our Germiston fab floor and in several sample bays nationwide. Each rack has 6 to 10 lanes with clear thickness and colour tags, plus fork clearance for easy bakkie or forklift loading. This setup stops offcuts from piling up or blocking walkways, and makes it simpler for staff to see what steel is on hand at a glance.

We have included bay habit cards and kanban tags to keep shift records and remnant checks quick. This means offcut recovery does not become a sideline job. Clean lanes and proper tagging help ensure that remnants are reused before new stock is cut, keeping waste down and helping with job tracking.

Clear remnant costing for job and contract control

Remnant costing is now part of daily checks using ScrapRack’s card and tag system. Fabricators weigh or measure offcuts, tag them by thickness, and log them against the shift. This simple process helps track how much steel is used or left after each job or contract.

The system is built to work with South African contract requirements, helping yards record what material was used where, and making monthly stocktake less of a scramble. Colour-coded tags and shift log cards help avoid mix-ups, especially on multi-bay shopfloors where many jobs run at once.

Keeping the floor moving and safe

Organised ScrapRack lanes mean less time lost searching for the right offcut or clearing clutter before starting hot work. It also helps with compliance under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, keeping walkways clear and reducing manual handling risks.

For coastal shops, we recommend regular checks on racks for rust and safe stacking, as humidity quickly attacks bare steel. On the Highveld, watch for dust build-up around fork lanes. Our system is designed to help workshop managers, foremen and trainers keep the fab floor safe and productive year-round.
